history
Poorboy
Yacht Club's original building was built in the early 1800's as
a sea captain's house. Years before, Stirliing Basin had been the earliest
part of Greenport to be settled because of its protected deep-water cove
and easy access to fishing and whaling waters. For the same reason, rumrunners
of the 1930's found the harbor perfectly suited to their needs, and a
trap door in the attic of the club whispers of Prohibition secrets.
The club's charter reads:
"The Poorboy's Yacht Club, established in the summer of 2003,
enjoys the distinction of being one of the newest and most unique yacht
clubs in North America. Its founding members are determined to further
recreational sailing, yachting, racing and social fellowship. In fact,
the hallmark of the club is a solid commitment to peaceful relaxation,
promoted by these dreams of the sea. As a guest here, a small portion
of your payment is put toward your dues, and you are a member..."
The first summer was filled by transient guests at the club, week by
week, before the bulkheading was done. The rave reviews of these guests
gave the poorboys renewed enthusiasm for future complete seasons.
